Radio fest wraps early due to floods
Sunday's (6/21) B-93 Birthday Bash finale at the fairgrounds in Ionia, MI, was canceled as flood waters from the Grand River continued to rise following a weekend storm, according to The Grand Rapids Press. Event organizers said it was essential to play it safe and cancel the show after consulting with the National Weather Service.
Flooding caused by Friday (6/19) night thunderstorms also forced the Bash festivities to wrap up early Saturday with an acoustic set by Blake Shelton , Craig Morgan and surprise guest Michelle Branch that ended up being the event finale.
Several vehicles were submerged up to their windshields on Saturday, when the river, which snakes around the Ionia Fairgrounds, crested at 17 feet and continued to rise. Fans reportedly were stuck for hours waiting for trucks to tow vehicles from flooded lots throughout the day.
Hundreds of people evacuated from the fairgrounds on Saturday reportedly were forced to leave their vehicles behind. Many who returned on Sunday to retrieve their cars were told they'd have to wait at least until Wednesday before the site was safe and secure enough to enter. Officials said security personnel were in place to ensure there would be no looting of the vehicles, according to the newspaper.
