Sunny Day Real Estate reunites for fall tour
Emo progenitors Sunny Day Real Estate will reunite this fall with their original lineup for a month-long North American headlining tour.
The group, which has been defunct since 2000, will kick off the outing Sept. 17 in Vancouver, British Columbia, tackling a coast-to-coast, 20-city tour that winds down Oct. 16 in Seattle. Dates are below.
The reunion shows will feature the band's original lineup of Nate Mendel (bass), William Goldsmith (drums), Dan Hoerner (guitar, vocals) and Jeremy Enigk (vocals, guitar), who recorded a pair of albums--1994's "Diary" and a self-titled sophomore effort in 1995--that helped define and establish emo as a musical genre.
After breaking up in 1995, the band regrouped--sans Mendel, who had gone on to join Foo Fighters, a job he still holds--for another pair of albums, most notably 1998's "How It Feels to Be Something On," before disbanding again in 2000.
"I wasn't around for the second version of the band that recorded the 3rd and 4th albums, so I've always had a feeling of unfinished business there," Mendel said in a press statement. "We had all these out-sized ideas back then, 'Everyone's going to learn a new instrument,' and 'Let's do a rock opera,' but before we could get anywhere with them, the band broke up.
"We left behind all these weird and beautiful songs, though, and they’ve stuck with me all this time. I'm really happy that we get a chance to play them together again."
Meanwhile, the band's label, Sub Pop, will reissue the group's first two albums on Sept. 15. Both re-mastered sets will include bonus tracks and newly written liner notes.
