Deftones shelve album, look toward future
Deftones have postponed the release of their upcoming album, "Eros," in light of the uncertainty of bassist Chi Cheng's recovery from a November auto accident, according to a post on the band's blog.
Though Cheng's condition allowed him to be moved from the hospital's critical care unit to a brain-rehabilitation hospital in December, the band said it feels as if it's "no closer to knowing what is ultimately going to happen to him."
In recent months, Cheng has been in and out of the hospital. According to updates written by his family at the website One Love for Chi," as of last week he had been hospitalized for a month for treatment of infections.
The decision to hold off on releasing "Eros" is not a direct reflection on Cheng's condition or potential for recovery, the band said. "The songs recorded for 'Eros' are very special to us as they are the latest with Chi. ... However, as we neared completion on 'Eros,' we realized that this record doesn't best encompass and represent who we are currently as people and as musicians."
Deftones expect to release "Eros" at some point, but for now will return to the studio to do "what we felt was right artistically."
In addition to working on new songs, the band is getting ready to head out on a series of summer dates beginning July 25 at the Pentaport Festival in South Korea.
The band also is working on producing a benefit show for Cheng in Los Angeles sometime this fall.
