New Releases, Oct. 10: The Wallflowers, Flesh-N-Bone, Slash, others

Jakob Dylan and the Wallflowers surface this week with “Breach” (Interscope), the group’s first album in almost four years. The disc is the follow-up to the band’s 1996 breakthrough album “Bringing Down the Horse,” which has been certified quadruple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America for sales of more than 4 million copies. Several successful singles, including the Top 10 hit “One Headlight,” spurred on sales of the disc.

“Sleepwalker,” the first single from “Breach,” is currently No. 2 on industry trade publication Radio & Record’s adult alternative chart, which measures national radio airplay.

The Wallflowers are in the midst of a brief headlining club tour to help launch the new album. Last week, they opened four shows for the Who at New York City’s Madison Square Garden.

“Free the West Memphis Three” (Aces & Eights)--a benefit album featuring tracks by Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder and the Supersuckers, Tom Waits, Joe Strummer, L7, John Doe, Nashville Pussy and other--hits shelves this week. The disc was created in order to raise both funds for and awareness of the plight of Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin, and Jessie Misskelly Jr., according to the official Aces & Eights website.

The three men, who have become known as the West Memphis Three, were convicted of killing three 8-year-old boys in the early ‘90s. The case gained significant exposure with the 1996 release of a documentary titled “Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills.” The film reportedly casts significant doubt on the guilt of the three men convicted for the brutal crime.

Flesh-N-Bone of Bone Thugs-N-Harmony fame releases his second solo effort this week, “The Fifth Dog Lets Loose” (Koch). The disc is a follow-up to his 1996 solo debut, “T.H.U.G.S.” (Def Jam). The rapper--a.k.a. Stanley Howse--was recently sentenced to 11 years in prison after being convicted on felony weapons charges.

“Blender” (Atlantic), the latest from Collective Soul, is set for release this week. The disc is the follow-up to the Atlanta-based band’s 1999 release “Dosage.” The new album’s first single, “Why Pt. 2,” entered Radio & Records’ adult alternative chart at No. 26 last week. The album also contains the track “Perfect Day,” which features an appearance by Elton John.

Former Guns ‘N’ Roses axeslinger Slash is back with his Snakepit project this week, serving up the group’s second album “Ain’t Life Grand” (Koch). “It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere” (Geffen), the guitarist’s first post-Guns album, was released in 1995.
