Jane's Addiction frontman talks reunion, Lollapalooza

Jane's Addiction frontman/Lollapalooza founder Perry Farrell isn't afraid to admit when he has musician envy. After all, it was Rage Against the Machine's 2008 Lollapalooza set that inspired him to return Jane's Addiction to the festival's stage.

"I looked out and I saw a sea of 80,000 people," Farrell said an interview with LiveDaily. "You have to understand, musicians when they're at a concert, they just start to get antsy. They want to get up there themselves. Watching Rage, I started to imagine ... Jane's Addiction quering the audience and playing for the audience and the audience responding. I went out this whole year with Jane's Addiction, working on our craft again, getting us back up to speed to pick up where we left off in 1991, when were our last shows as the original headliners of Lollapalooza."

Dubbing it his "baby," the now-18-year-old Lollapalooza will appear in Grant Park 7-9 with a host of music's best acts. When asked who the break-out bands are going to be this year, Farrell inquired if he could just gush about Jane's Addiction a little more.

"It's 18 years in the making," Farrell said. "It was my dream to bring Jane's back to Lollapalooza. We're going to do some amazing theatrical things. We have the cooperation of the City of Chicago to pull off some of these theatrical pieces. We are going to be doing just that. We're putting a special show together that we've never done before."

Aside from Jane's Addiction, Farrell is looking forward to seeing Kings of Leon, whom he calls "the hottest group in the country right now," and Depeche Mode, "who I think of as a seminal group alongside people like New Order, combining live music and live instruments with electronics."

"And I have to say, though, Lou Reed has been my hero for forever, since I was a teen," Farrell continued. "I can't wait to go and see Lou and see what he's doing. He's never done an American festival. It's the first time and I know he's really geared up. Snoop Dogg's going to be great for a party. Thievery Corporation is amazing live. They have probably 12 people playing on stage. They have vocalists and instrumentalists. This year, my personal little faves have been Animal Collective and Santigold. I listen to Santigold's music and her voice I love it. I love what Animal Collective do."

But he's really thrilled about an expanded dance floor built to hold 10,000 "dance enthusiasts."

"There's going to be some top-of-the-line DJs--MSTRKRFT, Dark Wave Disco and Deadmau5 will all be there, as well as myself and my wife. It's going to be a great, great three days."
