Sufjan Stevens juggles new releases, fall dates
Singer/songwriter Sufjan Stevens will take a timeout from his busy creative schedule long enough to embark on a headlining tour this fall ahead of a pair of new releases.
Following a Sept. 12 slot at Monticello, NY's ATP festival, Stevens will kick off the headlining trek Sept. 21 and 22 in Philadelphia. The 13-city outing will run through early October and conclude with four shows in New York City. Details are included below.
According to Stevens' record label, Asthmatic Kitty, the tour is unrelated to the singer's film/orchestra project, "The BQE," a "symphonic and cinematic exploration of New York City's infamous Brooklyn-Queens Expressway" that was commissioned by the Brooklyn Academy of Music, according to a press release.
The project featured an original film by the performer and live performances that included Stevens fronting a 36-person backing band last November. A multimedia package including a CD of the show's soundtrack, a DVD of Brooklyn-Queens Expressway footage and a 40-page booklet is due to hit stores Oct. 20, according to the record label.
Another Stevens project, "Run Rabbit Run," featuring rearranged versions of the songs from his 2001 album "Enjoy Your Rabbit," is also set to surface in October.
Stevens' most recent release is 2006's "Songs For Christmas," a five-EP box set featuring various Christmas-related songs recorded over the years. Its 2005 predecessor, "Illinois," is Stevens' fifth and most recent full-length studio album, and the second installment of the performer's ongoing "50 States Project," a planned 50-part series of albums commemorating every US state. Stevens paid tribute to his home state in the first volume of the series, 2003's "Greetings From Michigan: The Great Lakes State."
