Album Chart: George Strait ends Jackson's posthumous No. 1 reign
"Twang," the latest album from country superstar George Strait, outsold all of its competition during its first week in stores.
With first-week sales of 155,000 copies, "Twang" becomes the first album since Michael Jackson's death to top both The Billboard 200 chart and the Top Comprehensive Albums chart during the same week; the latter chart encompasses sales figures for all albums sold in the US, while The Billboard 200 features albums released in the past 18 months.
Jackson's best-of compilation "Number Ones," which had topped the Top Comprehensive Albums chart each week since the singer's unexpected death earlier this summer, drops to No. 2 after selling 80,000 copies during its most recent week.
Meanwhile, injecting more fresh blood into The Billboard 200 is Neil Diamond, whose "Hot August Night/NYC," a live CD/DVD set sold exclusively at WalMart and Sam's Club stores, debuts at No. 2 on first-week sales of 57,000 copies.
The Black Eyed Peas' "The E.N.D." follows at No. 3 with 45,000 copies sold, while Cobra Starship's "Hot Mess" enters the chart at No. 4 with sales of 42,000 copies, and Kings of Leon's "Only By the Night" stays put at No. 5 after falling just shy of Cobra Starship's total.
Rounding out the Top 10 are the "Now 31" hits compilation at No. 6 with just under 39,000 copies; Maxwell's "BLACKsummers'night" at No. 7 with slightly more than 38,000 copies; Daughtry's "Leave This Town" at No. 8 with a little less than 38,000 copies; Taylor Swift's "Fearless" at No. 9 with 37,000 copies; and Justin Moore's self-titled debut at No. 10 with 34,000 copies.
