Disney hopes to remake 'Yellow Submarine' in 3-D
Disney has revealed plans to remake "Yellow Submarine," the 1968 animated movie featuring The Beatles.
According to published reports, Robert Zemeckis will direct the feature, which will be in 3-D as opposed to the original 2-D cartoon, in which the character Old Fred meets up with the British icons to travel to Pepperland in a yellow submarine and fight off the Blue Meanies.
Zemeckis, who directed the "Back to the Future" series, plans to use the performance-capture technology seen in his previous animated works, including "Beowulf" and "The Polar Express." The filmmaker is currently at work on a 3-D remake of "A Chrismas Carol," starring Jim Carrey as Scrooge.
Walt Disney Studios reportedly is still working on obtaining rights to the 16 Beatles songs used in the original film, including "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" and "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds."
No word yet on casting for the remake, which is currently slated for a 2012 release.
