Green Day to record '21 Guns' with cast of musical

Green Day is recording a new version of its hit "21 Guns" with the cast of "American Idiot," the stage-play based on band's 2004 album of the same title, according to a press release. The cast, which has been appearing in the critically acclaimed show at Berkeley Rep since early September, also is shooting a video for the song with the band.

The "American Idiot" album was brought to life for the stage by Tony Award-winning director Michael Mayer, who collaborated with Green Day singer/guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong on the storyline.

The digital version of the "21 Guns" single has sold more than one million downloads and the video won three 2009 MTV Video Music Awards in September. The band, which performed the song last night (11/22) at the American Music Awards, will appear on NBC's New Year's Eve with Carson Daly on Dec. 31.
