Michael Jackson's death officially ruled a homicide

Michael Jackson 's death was officially ruled a homicide and determined to have been caused by a combination of the surgical anesthetic propofol combined with anti-anxiety drugs, according to a Los Angeles Times report. The newspaper confirmed speculation and unofficial reports, citing a one-page statement from the coroner's office which listed the official cause of Jackson's's June 25 death as "acute propofol intoxication" with the additional factor of "benzodiazepine effect."

Three different benzo-class sedatives were found in Jackson's system but only the anti-anxiety drug lorazepam, known to many by the brand name Ativan, was cited alongside propofol as "the primary drugs responsible" responsible for the superstar's death, according to the newspaper report. Toxicology tests also detected the local anesthetic lidocaine and the stimulant ephedrine in the King of Pop's blood.

The coroner's classification of homicide--the killing of one person by another--may not directly translate into criminal charges. Insiders have said Jackson's history of drug use and health problems could complicate any prosecution. However, a law enforcement source told The Times that the tox report has led investigators to suspect that Jackson's doctor, Conrad Murray, may have given the pop star more propofol than he told police.

Murray's attorney reportedly called on authorities to release the entire report so independent experts could examine the results. He said a forensic pathologist working in Murray's defense has been hamstrung by the limited information in the coroner's statement, according to the newspaper.

The complete toxicology results and the final coroner's report were not made public, reportedly at the request of the Los Angeles Police Department and the Los Angeles County district attorney's office.

California Attorney General Jerry Brown announced on Friday (8/28) that, at the request of the LAPD, his office would launch an independent investigation into several doctors who may have treated Jackson in recent months.
