New releases, Oct. 17: Limp Bizkit, Everlast, Johnny Cash, others
Limp Bizkit tops this week’s batch of new releases with “Chocolate Starfish and the Hotdog Flavored Water” (Flip/Interscope), the follow-up to the group’s 1999 breakthrough disc “Significant Other.”
Last month, Limp Bizkit announced that random copies of the new album will contain autographed gold CDs entitling the user to one of a number of prizes, including the grand prize of backstage passes for life. The tactic is likely to result in many fans buying multiple copies of the disc, boosting sales of the album.
To mark the release of the new disc, the group has several high-profile appearances scheduled in New York City on Tuesday (10/17), according to its official website, including stops on "The Howard Stern Show" and MTV’s "Total Request Live," as well as a record-signing at Times Square’s Virgin Megastore at 4:30 p.m.
On Monday night (10/16), the group is scheduled to participate in an online chat on America Online at 7 p.m. PT.
The Anger Management tour--which features Limp Bizkit, Eminem, Papa Roach and Xzibit--is set to kick off with a two-night stand in New Jersey this Thursday and Friday nights (10/19-10/20).
“Significant Other,” which featured the group’s breakthrough hit “Nookie,” has been certified sextuple-platinum by the Recording Association of America (RIAA) for shipping more than six million copies.
Following the success of his first post-House of Pain solo effort, Everlast returns to the fold this week with “Eat at Whitey’s” (Tommy Boy), featuring his latest single “Black Jesus.” The disc is the follow up to his multi-platinum 1998 album “Whitey Ford Sings the Blues,” featuring the Grammy-nominated single “What It’s Like.”
“Eat at Whitey’s” also follows in the wake of Everlast’s highly successful and critically acclaimed collaboration with Carlos Santana on the song “Put Your Lights On,” featured on Santana’s comeback disc “Supernatural.” The song won the Grammy award earlier this year for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. The guitar legend returns the favor on “Eat at Whitey’s” by playing on the tune “Babylon Feeling.”
Other guest appearances on the new disc include Cypress Hill frontman B-Real and singer Merry Clayton, who is best known for her backing vocals on the Rolling Stones’ hit “Gimme Shelter.”
According to Tommy Boy's Everlast website, the singer-rapper-songwriter is scheduled to appear on the television program “Politically Incorrect” on Wednesday night (10/18), and on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" on Thursday night (10/19).
Everlast is currently on tour with Santana, and will follow that run with an opening stint for the Wallflowers next month.
“American III: Solitary Man” (American) is the latest from country-music legend Johnny Cash . The disc finds the man in black accompanied on several numbers by musicians such as Tom Petty--who appears on two tracks, including a Cash's cover of Petty’s “I Won’t Back Down"--Sheryl Crow and fellow country icon Merle Haggard.
The album is third Cash disc produced by Rick Rubin, the Def Jam co-founder who is best known for his work with modern rock and hip-hop acts such as Red Hot Chili Peppers, Slayer and Run D.M.C. Rubin produced Cash’s last two Grammy-winning albums: 1994's “American Recordings” (Best Contemporary Folk Album) and 1997's “Unchained” (Best Country Album).
“Solitary Man” on vinyl hit stores last week, according to American Records.
Black Sabbath guitar god Tony Iommi drops “Iommi” (Priority/Divine), his first solo effort, this week. Each of the disc’s 11 tracks feature vocals by a number of rock-and-roll heavies, including Henry Rollins, Billy Idol, Smashing Pumpkins’ Billy Corgan, Pantera’s Phil Anselmo, and Iommi’s Black Sabbath bandmate Ozzy Osbourne. “Goodbye Lament,” a track featuring vocals by Foo Fighters’ frontman Dave Grohl, clocked in at No. 20 on industry trade publication Radio & Records’ rock chart last week, which measures national radio airplay.
Squirrel Nut Zippers float their fourth album "Bedlam Ballroom" (Mammoth). The group will launch the disc with a Tuesday (10/17) appearance on “Live! With Regis,” and have also announced the dates for a fall tour.
“Bedlam Ballroom” comes in the wake of the group's previous two discs, 1996's gold-certified "Hot" and 1998's platinum-certified "Perennial Favorites.” The band's debut disc "The Inevitable Squirrel Nut Zippers" was released in 1995.
