Beastie Boys' MCA turns to Tibetan doctors during cancer recovery
Adam Yauch, better known as MCA of Beastie Boys , says he recently returned from India, where he traveled to get some input from Tibetan doctors as he continues to recover from the recent removal of a cancerous tumor that was found in his left salivary gland.
"I'm feeling healthy, strong and hopeful that I've beaten this thing, but of course, time will tell," Yauch said in a message posted at the group's website. "I'm taking Tibetan medicine and at the recommendation of the Tibetan doctors, I've been eating a vegan/organic diet."
In addition to conferring with doctors, Yauch also visited a nunnery, where he received some additional support.
"They did a puja (religious ceremony) for me to help me get well," he wrote. "One nun said to me, 'We do prayers and then you are better.' So I've got that going for me, which is nice."
Yauch underwent surgery in late July after doctors discovered the tumor. In early August, he said that the surgery was a success, but that he was preparing to also undergo several weeks of radiation therapy.
"Fortunately, the cancer was located early and was localized in a location that will not affect Yauch's vocal chords," a publicist for the Beastie Boys said in a press release. "The early detection and localization reportedly made for a successful surgical procedure."
At the time Yauch's cancerous tumor was discovered, the Beastie Boys were on the verge of releasing a new album, "Hot Sauce Committee Part 1," and were scheduled to play a number of concert dates. The album's release was subsequently postponed indefinitely, and all live performances were canceled.
