Bruce Springsteen cancels show after roadie's death

Bruce Springsteen canceled his scheduled concert in Kansas City, MO, Monday night (10/26) following the death of his cousin and assistant road manager, Lenny Sullivan.

Sullivan, 36, was found dead in his room at a local hotel Monday afternoon. A Kansas City police spokesperson told the Associated Press that the death was being investigated, but added that it did not appear suspicious.

"A warm and sensitive person, he was beloved by Bruce, the band, the crew, and the entire Thrill Hill family," read a message posted at Springsteen's website.

"Bruce and The Band deeply appreciate the understanding of our Kansas City audience and look forward to returning at the earliest opportunity." All tickets will be refunded at the point of purchase, according to the statement, and there are no plans to reschedule the appearance.

The cancellation comes as Springsteen and his E Street Band are entering his final stretch of dates on their current tour, possibly their last for some time to come. Following an Oct. 29 appearance in New York's Madison Square Garden (as part of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 25th anniversary celebration), Springsteen has 10 shows left on his calendar next month.

E Street Band guitarist Steven Van Zandt hinted last month during a conference call with reporters that the current dates could be the last opportunity for fans to see Springsteen and the band for quite some time to come.

"We are going to take a break," Van Zandt said during the teleconference. "I don't know how long, one year, year-and-a-half, two years off. This is a good time to see us. We may not be as pretty, [but] we seem to be getting better in funny ways."

On the road, Springsteen continues to support "Working on a Dream," his 16th studio album and the follow-up to 2007's "Magic." The new set debuted at No. 1, making it the ninth chart-topping album of Springsteen's 40-year recording career.
