MTV inks television-rights deal for Michael Jackson's 'This Is It'
MTV Networks, a division of Viacom, has acquired the exclusive US television rights to Michael Jackson's "This Is It," according to a press release.
Under the deal, MTV can broadcast the movie beginning 2011 on any and/or all of its domestic channels, including MTV, VH1, VH1 Classic and Palladia. The network's deal also extends to parent company Viacom's BET Networks.
In a statement, MTV Networks Music Group president Van Toffler said the film is a true testament to Jackson's musical genius, passion and commitment to his craft. "Michael Jackson has always been inextricably tied to our viewers as they witnessed his evolution from a talented performer to a global icon who redefined music. Now, with this film, we can help give his fans a chance to see his final performance."
"This Is It" opened in US theaters on Oct. 28 for what was to be a two-week run. However, the film is expected to remain on the big screen at least through Thanksgiving weekend.
To date, the movie has brought in more than $220 million in worldwide box office receipts.
