Todd Rundgren flies 'Wizard' to California
Todd Rundgren has scheduled a new round of complete-album performances of his 1973 classic "A Wizard, a True Star" for December.
The versatile rock performer/songwriter/producer will stick to California during the outing, which kicks off Dec. 1 in San Francisco. Additionally, Rundgren will visit Los Angeles, Sacramento and Ventura on the trip. Details are included below.
Rundgren took the album on tour in September to seven cities with a show that included multiple costume changes, according to a press release, along with theatrical props to accompany the songs.
"People were wearing costumes and they had special effects and lasers and that sort of stuff to enhance the shows," Rundgren said in a press statement of his attempt to recreate the atmosphere of the album's era. "We'll truck a bunch of that out as well...it's not just the music of the era; it's a presentation in the style of that era."
Rundgren's backing band will remain the same for the December shows--Jesse Gress, Kasim Sulton, Prairie Prince, Greg Hawkes, Bobby Strickland and Ralph Schuckett--with Schuckett replacing longtime Rundgren sideman and keyboardist Roger Powell, who returned to his job in the computer-software industry.
Rundgren's most recent studio release is last year's "Arena," which he recorded following his stint in the ill-fated New Cars, which ended when guitarist Elliot Easton broke his collarbone in a tumble on the erstwhile supergroup's tour bus.
"It was at that point that I got back into doing the guitar-oriented, guitar-quartet thing," Rundgren explained to LiveDaily last year. "It was a quick and easy way to tour when I found myself suddenly without a tour from injury. The response that I got was sort of remarkable. I think it was taking fans back to a time when they first became fans."
