Album Review: David Bowie, "Space Oddity - 40th Anniversary Edition" (Virgin/EMI)

Add EMI's 40th-anniversary edition of David Bowie 's "Space Oddity" to the short list of albums significantly enhanced by a bonus disc. New mixes, stereo versions, radio broadcasts and demos combine to limn Bowie's early work with producer Tony Visconti--an alternate version of "Wild Eyed Boy From Freecloud" with just Bowie on voice and guitar and Paul Buckmaster on cello, and a nine-and-a-half minute version of "Memory of a Free Festival" being the highlights.

A "Space Oddity" demo and a version of the tune in Italian, "Ragazzo Solo, Ragazza Sola," bookend the collection of tunes that have been available on a host of now-out-of-print reissues. Three recordings from BBC Radio's "DLT Show" capture Bowie in potent voice, especially on "Unwashed and Somewhat Slightly Daze," the only cut from the October 1969 session that was broadcast.

The re-recordings of "Memory of a Free Festival" for a 1970 single release features the debut of Mick Ronson in Bowie's band. As is pointed out in Kevin Cann's in-depth liner notes, Bowie sings more relaxed and confidently than on the album version. A fully realized demo of "An Occasional Dream" features Bowie's former partner John Hutchinson. It spells out the singer's folkie roots, a blueprint that holds its own against the orchestrated album version.
