U2 [ tickets ] has confirmed that it will headline next summer's Glastonbury Festival, the band's first-ever appearance at the iconic UK outdoor festival.

Performing on the festival's signature Pyramid Stage, the band will top the June 25 bill of the six-day outdoor musical celebration, which will run June 23-28 at Worthy Farm outside of the village of Pilton, England, located six miles from the event's namesake town of Glastonbury.

"The 26-year-old rumor has finally come true," festival founder and director Michael Eavis said in a statement posted on the event's website. "At last, the biggest band in the world are going to play the best festival in the world! Nothing could be better for our 40th anniversary party. And there are even more surprises in the pipeline..."

This summer's Glastonbury Festival, featuring headliners Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band and Blur, drew close to 150,000 attendees, and featured more than 500 acts performing on 20 stages.

U2 has recently begun shaping plans for a 2010 North American tour. The trek gets underway with a two-night stand in Southern California starting June 6, and includes appearances in Seattle (6/20), Toronto (7/3) and Chicago (7/6) among its highlights, as well as a July 19 date at New Meadowlands Stadium in New Jersey. Tickets for all dates except except the group's stop in Montreal--which has been expanded into a two-night stand--are currently on sale; the Montreal dates go on sale Nov. 30. Full information is posted at U2's website.

U2 is touring behind its 12th studio album, "No Line on the Horizon," which surfaced in February. The set debuted at No. 1 in 30 countries, including the US, where it posted first-week sales of about 484,000 copies.
