Love And Rockets Radiates Goth Charm In Los Angeles

The atmosphere was set at the exotic Mayan Theatre in Los Angeles before Love and Rockets even made it to the stage. Minimally lit with "v-shaped" blue lights that were sporadically placed around the stage, the band's equipment, dawned with a glow in the dark galaxy, looked as though it dropped from outer space. As music blared from the speakers for a few minutes, the audience increasingly became louder and louder in anticipation for Love and Rockets to arrive. Dressed alike in striped glow in the dark shirts, the enigmatic, Daniel Ash, David J and Kevin Haskins looked like they had just returned from Venus, only making the picture complete.

Having paved the way for many ''goth'' and electronic bands, Love and Rockets are one of the most ground-breaking, ever-changing and seminal groups of the past two decades. Known for their dark, enigmatic music, Love and Rockets have gone from the acoustic, guitar driven Earth, Sun, Moon, to the ambient-techno Hot Trip to Heaven, and now to their fifth lp, ''Lift'' which combines all their styles from the past.

Sticking to most of their new music for the first few songs, Love and Rockets managed to hypnotize the crowd with the intense, hard hitting, R.I.P. 20 c. Keeping it upbeat, Love and Rockets went right into the sexy and slinky, Holy Fool, the first single from Lift. With a kaleidescope of blues and purples setting the mood, the haunting and beautiful Party's Not Over captured the eclectic and fragile voice of Daniel Ash.

Already completely satisfied with the set so far, Love and Rockets broke into the classic, Kundalini Express which got the crowd on the floor moshing (yes, moshing to Love and Rockets). Playing a more electric and cutting version of Mirror People and a cover of T-Rex's, 20th Century Boy, Daniel Ash seemed to lose himself into a trance by his own talents on the guitar.

Walking back and forth on the stage and jumping into the pit, Ash appeared to be in a trance as he kicked the mike stand down and laid on his back playing the guitar sending his fans into a frenzy. Adding to the applause were screaming voices that yelled, ''Daniel'' and ''David.'' Returning for two encores, Love and Rockets closed the night with two catalog favorites, Ball of Confusion and No New Tell to Tell.
