Patty Griffin readies gospel CD
Patty Griffin will release her seventh album on Jan. 26, according to a press release. The gospel-inspired recording, titled "Downtown Church, was recorded live at The Downtown Presbyterian Church in Nashville with Griffin singing from the pulpit.
The Buddy Miller-produced record features additional vocals by Emmylou Harris, Raul Malo, Jim Lauderdale, Shawn Colvin, Mike Farris and Buddy and Julie Miller. Also featured on the release are Regina and Ann McCrary, whose father was one of the founding members of the legendary gospel group the Fairfield Four.
The recording includes a diverse group of gospel songs as well as two originals and a closing hymn attributed to St. Francis of Assisi.
Griffin said in a statement that she was inspired to write the original material after listening to Bob Dylan's religious work.
"Buddy sent me a lot of [Dylan's] stuff," Griffin said. "Listening to Dylan, who's contemporary, and who's in my genre, if I may be so bold as to say that, I felt like I really had to write my own and put a couple in there that feel like me."
Griffin and her band will be touring throughout 2010.
