U.S. clubs host Jamaican dancehall star Beenie Man
Jamaican dancehall DJ Beenie Man is delivering his hip-hop-infused reggae to the North American club circuit during a recently launched, two-month tour scheduled to run through early December. His jam-packed itinerary has him playing shows in five or more cities most weeks.
The latest album from Beenie Man (a.k.a. Moses Davis), "Art and Life" (Virgin), cracked the top 20 of Billboards Top R&B and Hip-Hop Albums chart, and remains in the charts top 40 after 15 weeks. His first album, 1986s "The Invincible Beenie Man, 10-Year-Old DJ Wonder, was released when he was still a child.
The Kingston, Jamaica, native has been edging more toward hip-hop in recent years. "Art and Life," Beenie Mans major label debut, features cameos by Wyclef Jean and Mya.
Beenie Mans 1999 U.S. tour came to an early conclusion when he and three of his bandmates were arrested on a marijuana possession charge in Virginia.
