U.K. Charts: Texas, Spice Girls take No. 1 spots

LONDON--Scottish guitar band Texas entered the Official U.K. Album Chart at No. 1 on Sunday (10/29) with its new compilation "The Greatest Hits." The LP, which includes hits such as "Say What You Want," sold over 600,000 copies during its first week on release.

As a result of Texas’ move into the No. 1 spot, All Saints’ "Saints and Sinners" fell to No. 2 and Robbie Williams’ "Sing When You’re Winning" dived from No. 3 to No. 6. Meanwhile, Coldplay ’s "Parachutes" jumped up the chart from No. 9 to No. 3, and Eminem ’s "The Marshall Mathers EP" jumped from No. 10 to No. 5.

The only other new entry in the Top 10 this week was UB40’s "The Very Best Of 1980-2000" which entered the album chart at No. 7.

Other new albums this week included Lenny Kravitz’s "Greatest Hits" at No. 12 and Freddie Mercury’s "Solo" at No. 13. Indie group Teenage Fanclub’s eagerly anticipated "Howdy" debuted at a lower-than-expected No. 33, and new wave veterans Erasure’s "Love Boat" only made it to No. 45 after its first week of release.

Spice Girls proved that they still have a strong British fan base, as their first new single in two years, "Holler/Let Love Lead the Way," debuted at No. 1 on the Official U.K. Singles Chart. Their closest rival was pop singer Martine McCutcheon’s "I’m Over You," which debuted at No. 2.

The highest non-Brit at the top of the chart was Ricky Martin, whose single "She Bangs" entered the chart at No. 3. The only other new Top 10 entry this week was Coldplay’s "Trouble" at No. 10.
