Cher spikes new disc with prize-winning tickets

Cher , whose new CD “not.com.mercial” was released last week, has revealed that select copies of the disc contain special tickets that entitle their finder to a prize, according to a press release from her publicist. The grand prize is a trip for two to England to meet the singer.

Three copies of “not.com.mercial” contain a “golden ticket,” while five copies contain a “silver ticket,” according to the announcement. Those who find a golden ticket in their copies of the disc will receive a three-night trip for two to London, where they will meet Cher. Silver-ticket winners, meanwhile, will get a new Cher doll from Mattel.

The contest echoes a similar promotion that Limp Bizkit announced in September, in which the group placed autographed, gold CDs and prize-winning laminates in random copies of its Oct. 17 release, “Chocolate Starfish and the Hotdog Flavored Water” (Flip/Interscope). The grand prize in that promotion is backstage passes to any Limp Bizkit concert for the life of the band.

“Not.com.mercial” is being sold exclusively over the Internet through Cher’s official website and her online store. The album is the first to consist almost entirely of music written by the singer. In a statement released last month, she said that the new album’s "subject matter is darker and the language more colorful than her 'commercial' albums."

Cher’s previous release is 1998’s “Believe” (Warner Bros.), which has been certified by the Recording Industry Association of America for shipping over 4 million copies. Sales of the disc were spurred by the success of the album’s chart-topping title-track. Cher plans to begin work on the “commercial” follow-up to that album in London soon, and hopes to have the new release out by next spring, according to her singer’s publicist.

Meanwhile, in addition to her current Internet-only release, Cher can be heard on Italian singer Eros Ramazzotti’s new album, “Stile Libero.” The two duet on the album’s track “Piu’ Che Puoi,” for which Cher wrote the English lyrics, according to a press release.

On Nov. 16 at 7 p.m. ET, Cher is scheduled to participate in an online chat hosted by America Online. That same night, the singer will appear in an episode of the NBC sitcom “Will & Grace.” Streaming video of a recent Cher “fan conference” featuring the singer talking about “not.com.mercial,” meanwhile, is currently available online through ArtistDirect.

On Monday (11/13), Cher plans to attend a rally in Miami led by Rev. Jesse Jackson, according to an announcement on her official website. The rally is being held to call for the state of Florida to hold a new vote in the district of Palm Beach, where voting irregularities have been widely reported in the days following last week’s presidential election. The singer made a number of appearances on Nov. 6 to urge voters to cast their vote for Vice President Al Gore, according to her website.
