U.K. Charts: Beatles' '1' LP lives up to its name
LONDON--The Beatles soared straight to the top of the Official U.K. Album Chart on Sunday (11/18) with their new compilation album "1," which incorporates 27 of the legendary group's American and British No. 1 hits.
As a result of the Beatles' expected success, Westlife's second LP "Coast to Coast" was knocked to the No. 2 position while Texas ' "The Greatest Hits" rested for a second week at No. 3. Meanwhile, Steps' new album "Buzz" moved up two spots from No. 6 to No. 4.
Other new releases in the Top 10 included Oasis ' live album "Familiar to Millions" at No. 5 and Elton John's "One Night Only: The Greatest Hits" at No. 7.
The Offspring's "Conspiracy of One" made a fair show by debuting at No. 12 and Sade's first new LP in eight years, "Lovers Rock," debuted at No. 18.
The slip of Spice Girls ' third album from No. 2 to No. 16 after only one week on the chart proved that the group's U.K. fan base is waning. Marilyn Manson and actress-turned-pop-singer Martine McCutcheon also had relatively weak debuts for their new LPs: Manson's "Holy Wood" entered the chart at No. 23 and McCutcheon's "Wishing" entered at No. 25.
The Official U.K. Singles Chart also saw a new No. 1 entry this week as teen country singer Leann Rimes' "Can’t Fight the Moonlight" knocked A1's "Same Old Brand New You" down to No. 8 after a week. The second highest entry this week came from French dance group Daft Punk's "One More Time," debuting at No. 2.
Other Top 10 entries included Artful Dodger's "Please Don’t Turn Me On" at No. 4 and Darude's "Feel the Beat" at No. 5. Staten Island rappers Wu-Tang Clan also had their highest U.K. singles-chart entry to date as their new "Gravel Pit" single debuted at No. 6.
Notable Top 20 entries included Savage Garden's "Hold Me" at No. 16 and Lucy Pearl's "Don’t Mess with My Man" at No. 20.
