George Jones plans all-out return to the road for 2001
Judging from his busy tour schedule in 2001, fabled country crooner George Jones has fully recovered from the alcohol-related, single-car accident that nearly claimed his life in 1999. Jones booking agent has lined up well over 50 tour stops for the 69-year-old singer.
Given Jones spotty track record on the road--one of his nicknames is "No Show"--some changes in Jones tour itinerary are likely to occur throughout the year.
In March 1999, Jones suffered a collapsed lung and punctured liver when the SUV he was driving slammed into a bridge abutment. An emergency rescue team reportedly spent two hours extricating Jones from the wreckage. Jones, who has a history of alcoholism, later pled guilty to driving under the influence.
Jones played occasional concerts at the end of 1999, and even stirred up some controversy when he refused to perform at the Country Music Association (CMA) Awards after he was asked to perform an abbreviated version of his hit single "Choices." (Alan Jackson brought the crowd to its feet when he sang a few lines of "Choices" at the end of his CMA performance.)
