Foreigner, R. Kelly, Dr. Dre lead November’s RIAA certifications
Foreigner , R. Kelly, Dr. Dre, Eminem, Alabama , OutKast , Baha Men, Jessica Simpson and 98 Degrees all picked up multi-platinum album certifications from the Recording Industry Association of America in November. Multi-platinum status signifies U.S. sales of at least 2 million units.
Vintage rock act Foreigner, which reached the height of its popularity in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, picked up certification upgrades for six of its Atlantic Records titles: “Double Vision” (6 million), “Records,” (5 million), “Foreigner” (5 million), “Head Games” (3 million), “Agent Provocateur” (3 million) and “The Very Best and Beyond” (2 million). The new certifications bring Foreigner’s cumulative album sales to 31 million.
The 1998 R. Kelly release “R” was certified for sales of 7 million, and “Dr. Dre 2001,” the rap impresario’s 1999 album, hit the 6 million mark. “The Slim Shady LP,” the major label debut from Dre protégé Eminem, was certified for sales of 4 million.
“For the Record: 41 Number One Hits,” a compilation of Alabama tracks first released in 1998, surpassed sales of 4 million. The soundtrack to “Coyote Ugly” (1 million) was the only other country music title to pick up a platinum certification in November.
After just a month in stores, the new OutKast release “Stankonia” has been certified for sales of 2 million. The two-month-old 98 Degrees release “Revelation” also hit the 2 million mark. Rounding out the month’s multi-platinum certifications are the Baha Men’s “Who Let the Dogs Out” (2 million) and Jessica Simpson's "Sweet Kisses" (2 million).
Disturbed (“The Sickness”) and P.O.D. (“The Fundamental Elements of Southtown”) picked up their first platinum certifications (1 million albums sold) in November. Thanks in part to her appearance on the Eminem track “Stan,” Dido earned her first platinum record for “No Angel.”
Earlier this month, the Eagles’ “Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975” reached the 27 million sales level, surpassing Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” as the best selling U.S. album in history.
