New Releases, Jan. 9: Peter Frampton, 'Traffic' and 'Snatch' soundtracks, more
A reissued 1976 live album and two soundtracks are the most notable new releases in a quiet, post-holiday week that finds the music industry slowly beginning to awaken after two weeks of even less new blood on the music shelves.
Twenty-five years ago, Peter Frampton released “Frampton Comes Alive!”--a double-album that sold over 6 million copies and became the best-selling live rock album of all time. This week, Universal will re-release it as a remastered, 2-CD set that will feature four tracks not included on the original.
The album was recorded during several shows on Frampton’s 1975 tour, and it is from the master recordings of those same shows that three of the four newly added tracks--"Just the Time of Year," "Nowhere's Too Far for My Baby", and "White Sugar"--were culled, according to Frampton’s official website. The fourth song, “Day’s Dawning," is a live performance at the Record Plant Studios in Sausalito, Calif., that was recorded as part of a radio station promotion during the same time period.
“Frampton Comes Alive! - 25th Anniversary Deluxe Edition" (A&M/Universal) will be released as both a stereo CD and an audio DVD (DVDA). The new version will “have superior sound and less audience noise, and sounds much warmer and richer” than the 1976 original, according to Frampton’s website. The deluxe edition will also contain new tour photos and written material.
To promote the re-release of “Frampton Comes Alive!” the guitarist is scheduled to join the CBS Orchestra on "The Late Show with David Letterman" on Tuesday, Jan. 16. He is also slated to appear on the syndicated radio show "Rockline," on Wednesday, Jan. 17.
Filmmaker Steven Soderbergh’s latest movie, “Traffic,” spawns a soundtrack CD this week. The film--starring Michael Douglas and wife Catherine Zeta-Jones, Don Cheadle, Dennis Quaid and others--focuses on drug-trafficking, and features a score by former Red Hot Chili Peppers collaborator Cliff Martinez, who enlisted RHCP bassist Flea and musician Herbie Hancock to play on the piece. Martinez’s previous score work includes “The Limey,” “Sex, Lies and Videotape” and “Pump Up the Volume.”
The “Traffic” soundtrack also features new songs from Fatboy Slim and Morcheeba.
The soundtrack for the forthcoming film “Snatch”--the latest from “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels” director Guy Ritchie--joins “Traffic” in the soundtrack section this week. The album features songs from Oasis, Massive Attack, Klint, Mirwais, 10cc. Ritchie’s new wife, Madonna, contributes “Lucky Star” from her 1983, self-titled album. The disc also features short tracks containing dialogue from the film, which stars Brad Pitt and Benicio Del Toro.
