Faith Hill, Creed, Braxton score at the American Music Awards
Faith Hill walked away from Monday night’s (1/8) American Music Awards ceremony with three trophies, the most garnered by any artist at the event. Creed and Toni Braxton each claimed two awards, placing them atop a list of winners that also included Kid Rock, Backstreet Boys, ‘NSync, Dr. Dre and others.
Hill, who was nominated in four categories, won the awards for both favorite female country artist and favorite female pop or rock artist, as well as favorite country album for her 1999 release, “Breathe” (Warner Bros.). The honors followed Hill’s win in the best female vocalist category at last October’s CMA Awards.
Creed continued its awards-show winning streak with a victory in the favorite pop or rock album category for 1999’s “Human Clay” (Wind Up), an album that has sold over 8 million copies and is currently No. 7 on the Billboard 200 in its 66th week on the chart. The group also picked up the favorite alternative-music artist award. Last November, Creed cleaned house at the first annual My VH1 awards, at which the band landed four trophies.
Toni Braxton completed the list of multiple award winners by winning in the favorite soul/rhythm & blues music artist and the favorite soul/rhythm & blues music album categories; Braxton’s “The Heat” (La Face/Arista) was released last April.
‘NSync, who lost out in the two traditional categories for which they had been nominated, won the Internet artist of the year award. The award was determined by online votes cast via the American Music Awards official website.
Online voting also gave Chemical Brothers a win in the best of techno category, a new category added this year.
Non-competitive awards were handed out to Janet Jackson (award of merit) and Aerosmith (international artist). The latter act also performed its new song “Jaded” during the ceremony, which is slated for inclusion on the band’s forthcoming album.
Performances by 3 Doors Down, Toni Braxton, Billy Gilman, Jennifer Lopez, Ricky Martin, Martina McBride, Outkast, Pink, Shedaisy, Jessica Simpson, Britney Spears and were also featured.
The event was held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, and was co-hosted by Spears and L.L. Cool J.
AMA executive producer Dick Clark announced after Monday night’s (1/8) show that next year’s ceremony will include a new music award that will be given to an unsigned artist or band who will perform on the show, according to an Associated Press report.
