We just got an eye-opening press release saying that porn DVD distributor Vivid--what? oh, right: adult DVD distributor Vivid--held a contest among Tower Records stores. In this contest, the stores competed to see who had the best in-store Vivid display. Three stores won--in Las Vegas, Marina Del Rey, Calif., and Beaverton, Ore.--and, according to the release, the stores will be "indulging themselves in a trip to Camp Vivid in the Bahamas." We assume this means that all the employees of each store will be flown to the Bahamas.

We mention this because it's yet another milestone in porn's journey from the netherworld into the sunlight. It seems like only yesterday that pornographers sold film reels to bar owners out of the trunks of their cars. Today, Tower Records. Tomorrow, Wal-Mart!

Maybe this is all old news to you, but we don't shop at Tower much, and don't buy DVDs, so the fact that Tower had these porn displays came as quite a surprise. We were also surprised to learn that not only does Vivid have enough money to get Tower into this contest, but it has enough money for Camp Vivid in the Bahamas, whateverthehell that is (we can't find it on Vivid's website or through Yahoo!, which makes it seem all the more sinister, like a place where one of James Bond's arch-villains might live:

I need to charter a boat to Camp Vivid.

Oh, you don' wanna go dere, Mr. Bond. It's gots de contest winners out dere. Dey eat you alive, mon.).

Also, the press release includes Vivid Interactive's Current Top Ten DVD's, which have titles like "Eve's Gift" and "Blue Monday" and "Smokescreen." The lesson to pornographers: forget those cute titles like "All the Pretty Whores" or "F---ing Forrester." If you don't take start taking yourselves seriously, you'll never make it out from behind the curtain in the back of the video store.
