Coldplay to storm U.S. theaters in February
Coldplay will head to the U.S. next month for a series of headlining dates in support of its stateside debut, “Parachutes” (Nettwerk/Capitol). The British rock quartet’s first full-length release has been leaping up the U.S. album chart in recent weeks.
Released on Nov. 7, “Parachutes” first appeared on the Billboard 200 album chart last month at No. 189. The album has since risen to No. 68 on this week’s chart, up from No. 84 last week and No. 118 the week before.
The album's impressive performance on the charts comes courtesy of Coldplay ’s hit single, “Yellow”; the song has reached No. 9 on Billboard’s latest Modern Rock Tracks chart, and leapt from No. 16 to No. 11 on Radio & Records’ latest Alternative chart, which measures national radio airplay.
Currently on tour in Australia, the group will follow its U.S. outing with a series of April dates in the U.K.; "Parachutes" debuted at No. 1 on the U.K. album chart last summer.
Prior to releasing “Parachutes,” Coldplay served up a series of EPs in the U.K. between 1998 and 2000.
On Monday (1/15), Coldplay was nominated for three Brit Awards, comprising nods in the Best Group, Best Album and Best Newcomer categories. The ceremony takes place in the group’s homeland on Feb. 26.
