New Releases, Jan. 23: Lopez, Harrison, Donnas, JGB, Godhead, more

After several weeks with relatively few new albums hitting the shelves in music stores, a more formidable batch of new releases surfaces this week.

Jennifer Lopez delivers “J. Lo” (Epic) this week, the follow-up to her highly successful debut album, “On the 6.” The album features the single “Love Don’t Cost a Thing,” which is currently at No. 4 on Billboard’s Hot 100 singles chart, up from No. 10 last week.

The singer has a number of events scheduled to mark the release of the album, including an online chat set for Monday (1/22) at 3 p.m. that will be hosted at her official website. The site will also be featuring a streaming broadcast of “J. Lo” in its entirety several times throughout the day on Monday.

On Tuesday (1/23), Lopez is scheduled to appear on the television program “Live with Regis.” The singer will then turn up at the Virgin Megastore in West Hollywood, Calif., on Wednesday (1/24), where she will be autographing copies of “J. Lo.”

Subsequent television appearances are set for Friday (1/25) on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” Jan. 31 on “Late Show with David Letterman,” Feb. 1 on “The Today Show” and Feb. 10 on “Saturday Night Live.”

On Feb. 28, Lopez is scheduled to appear at the Grammy Awards in Los Angeles. “Let’s Get Loud,” a track from “On the 6,” is nominated in the ceremony’s Best Dance Recording Category.

“On the 6” was released in June 1999 and has shipped 5 million copies, according to Epic.

George Harrison ’s 1970 release “All Things Must Pass” (Capitol) has been given a makeover, and the album returns to record stores this week as a digitally remastered, 2-CD set. The 28-track collection features five bonus cuts, including the previously unreleased track “I Live for You,” as well as previously unreleased versions of “Beware of Darkness,” “Let It Down” and “What Is Life,” all of which were recorded during sessions for the original version of the album. The former Beatle also recorded a new version of the album’s track “My Sweet Lord,” tagged on the updated version as “My Sweet Lord (2000).”

New liner notes written by Harrison will also be included in the new version of “All Things Must Pass,” according to Capitol.

Capitol’s re-release of “All Things Must Pass” comes in the wake of the company’s Beatles compilation, “1,” which the company re-issued last November. That album is currently spending its seventh week at the top of U.S. album chart.

All-female punk quartet the Donnas have come of age, and are announcing their legal status with a new album titled “ The Donnas Turn 21” (Lookout!). The album features a remake of classic Judas Priest song “Living After Midnight,” as well as 13 original tracks.

“40 Boys in 40 Nights” and “Are You Gonna Move It For Me,” two songs from the new album, are currently being offered as free MP3 downloads on Lookout! Records official website.

The Donnas are scheduled to begin a tour in support of “The Donnas Turn 21” on Jan. 27.

Arista’s Grateful Dead imprint digs into the archives this week to deliver “Don’t Let Go” from the Jerry Garcia Band, a recording of the group’s May 21, 1976, concert at San Francisco’s Orpheum Theatre. Like his primary act, the late Grateful Dead frontman’s side project was known for its lengthy jams--which explains why this 2-CD set only houses a total of 15 songs.

A bonus track titled “Mighty High” is also included in this collection.

Godhead , the first band signed to Marilyn Manson’s Posthuman Records label, makes its debut this week with “2000 Years of Human Error.” Manson makes an appearance on the track “Break You Down.” The album also features the song “The Reckoning,” which was first released on Posthuman’s “The Blair Witch 2” soundtrack.

“2000 Years of Human Error” was produced by Danny Saber, who has also worked with David Bowie, Ozzy Osbourne and Garbage, according to gODHEAD’s official website.

Godhead is currently opening for Manson on the European leg of the Guns, God and Government tour.
