Jennifer Lopez tops album charts, Beatles '1' slips
By selling more than 270,000 copies during its first week in release, the new Jennifer Lopez album “J. Lo” (Epic) has put an end to the Beatles’ seven consecutive weeks atop the Billboard 200 album chart, according to industry sources.
Lopez managed to top a strong performance by reggae-infused R&B singer Shaggy, whose new release “Hotshot” (MCA) remains at No. 2 for a second straight week. The soundtrack to the film “Save the Last Dance” holds steady at No. 3.
The Beatles ’ hits compilation “1” (Capitol), which has spent a total of eight weeks at No. 1 on the album chart, tumbles to No. 4. According to industry sources citing SoundScan statistics, nearly 6 million copies of the album have sold in the U.S. to date, and more than 173,000 copies sold last week.
Two debut albums from artists aimed at the young teen market--a self-titled album by "Making the Band" stars O-town (J) and Dream’s “It was All a Dream” (Arista/Bad Boy)--enter the chart at Nos. 5 and 6, respectively.
Falling three slots to No. 7 is the compilation “Now That’s What I Call Music Vol. 5" (Columbia), and Creed’s "Human Clay" (Wind Up) falls three notches to No. 8.
Dido’s “No Angel” (Arista) which was released in June of 1999 but failed to enter the top 10 until three weeks ago, slips one position to No. 9. Rounding out the top 10 albums is Ja Rule’s “Rule 3:16” (Def Jam).
