Heat wave spawns more problems at Big Day Out

Several fans were hospitalized for heat exhaustion, and scores were treated at the scene during Fridays (2/2) Big Day Out show in Adelaide, Australia, according to regional press reports. Daytime temperatures in the area have been topping 100 degrees.

A spokesperson for an ambulance company told the Australian Associated Press that one person suffered a fractured shoulder and that six people were taken to a nearby hospital for heat-related illnesses. Nearly 200 people in the crowd of 20,000 were said to have been treated by first aid workers at the concert.

According to an AAP report, free water and sunscreen was made available to fans at the Adelaide show, and mist tents were set up at the venue. A recorded safety message played after each act, signs warned fans not to crowd-surf, and barriers were erected to prevent crushes.

The latest problems come a week after 15-year-old Jessica Michalik--who was caught in a crowd crush as Limp Bizkit performed at the tours stop in Sydney--suffered a heart attack that ultimately proved fatal. More than 600 people from that crowd of 55,000 were treated during the course of that daylong, multi-act event, mainly for heat exhaustion. Limp Bizkit, which had been the tours headliner, departed the event after the show.

In a statement posted yesterday on Limp Bizkits official website, frontman Fred Durst wrote: "We pulled out of the Big Day Out show because of s---ty security. We told the BDO security to make it better and they said to piss off. Two shows later a girl died, a Limp fan. That's bulls---."

Meanwhile, Big Day Out officials are beginning to ponder the impact that this years problems will have on future events. The organizers of the Big Day Out would like it to be known that once the chaos has calmed we will be presenting a survey relating to a wide range of issues that will affect the future of the Big Day Out. Stay Tuned to this site..... We need your input, said a statement posted to the events official website.

The year's final Big Day Out show is scheduled to take place on Sunday (2/4) in Perth.
