New Releases, Feb. 6: Rod Stewart, Jeff Beck, Tricky, Donny Osmond, more
February’s first batch of new releases is led by the latest solo efforts from former bandmates Rod Stewart and Jeff Beck . Tricky comes through with his first release for Anti Records, meanwhile, and Donny Osmond delivers a batch of show tunes.
Rod Stewart delivers “Human” (Atlantic) this week, the follow-up to 1998’s collection of U.K. covers, “When We Were the New Boys” (Warner Bros.). The album features the singer’s new single, “I Can’t Deny It,” which debuted at No. 26 on Billboard’s latest Adult Contemporary singles chart.
Originally slated for release last November, “Human” was delayed when Stewart underwent thyroid surgery, according to a press release.
The veteran British pop-rocker--who turned 56 in January--will mark the release of “Human” with a free, live performance in New York City at noon Eastern Time on Tuesday (2/6) that will be taped for the television program “Good Morning America,” according to his official website. Stewart will then be featured on the program's Feb. 7 through Feb. 9 editions, the site said.
Additional appearances are set for Feb. 8 on “The Late Show with David Letterman,” Feb. 15 on “Late Night with Conan O’Brien,” Feb. 16 on “The Rosie O’Donnell Show” and Feb. 19 on “The View.”
Stewart is also scheduled to participate in an online chat hosted by America Online at 8 p.m. Eastern Time on Tuesday (2/6).
“You Had It Coming” (Epic) is the latest from veteran guitar virtuoso Jeff Beck. The album hits the U.S. just two years after 1999’s Grammy-nominated “Who Else!,” Beck’s first full-fledged solo release of all-new material since 1989’s “Jeff Beck’s Guitar Shop.”
Beck--whose Jeff Beck Group was fronted by Rod Stewart in the late ‘60s--is set to embark on a U.S. tour in support of “You Had It Coming” on Feb. 15.
Tricky drops “Mission Accomplished” this week, a four-song EP that serves as his debut on Epitaph imprint Anti Records. The disc is the follow-up to 1999’s “Juxtapose” (Island), Tricky’s collaboration with Cypress Hill’s DJ Muggs and DMX producer Gease.
The British rap-electronica artist parted ways with Island Records shortly after the release of “Juxtapose,” and signed with Anti in April of last year, according to a press release from the label.
Donny Osmond returns to the realm of recording this week with “This Is the Moment” (Decca), a collection of 13 Broadway show tunes from musicals such as “Rent,” “Seussical,” “Aida,” “Riverdance,” “Jekyll & Hyde” and “Guys & Dolls.” Vanessa Williams and Rosie O’Donnell duet with the singer on “Not While I’m Around” and “You’ve Got a Friend In Me,” respectively.
In conjunction with the new release, Osmond is scheduled to appear on O’Donnell’s daytime television show on Tuesday (2/6), and will co-host “Live with Regis” on Thursday” (2/8). The singer is also set to participate in online chats on Yahoo! at 8 p.m. Eastern Time on Tuesday (2/6) and on the Osmond family’s official website at 9 p.m. Eastern Time on Thursday (2/8), according to his official website
“This Is the Moment” is the follow-up to Osmond’s 1998 holiday release, “Christmas at Home” (Sony).
Restless Records serves up the soundtrack to Fox television’s hit sit-com “Malcolm in the Middle” this week. The disc features the show’s theme song, “Boss of Me,” which was written and performed by They Might Be Giants. Tracks from Barenaked Ladies, Hanson, Travis and the Dust Brothers are also included.
They Might Be Giants are scheduled to perform “Boss of Me” on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” on Monday night (2/5), and again on “The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn” on Tuesday night (2/6), according to Restless. A video for the song has been sent to MTV and MTV2, according to the label’s official website
