Perry Farrell, Sean Lennon Raise Money For Jubilee 2000 Effort
Entering the world of Perry Farrell is an unforgettable experience and once you're in it, there's no looking back. Hosted by Farrell, the benefit for Jubilee 2000 was entertaining, stimulating and eye opening, from start to finish. The night was filled with a thrilling blend of music, dance, performance art and education. A true artist in every form, Farrell used this opportunity to reach the minds of his fans, hosting the first of many proposed benefits at the House of Blues in West Hollywood on Monday night (6/14).
Jubilee 2000 is a charity organization supporting Third World countries by encouraging leading economic powers to forgive vast debts to those nations. Farrell, who is spearheading the cause with other influential artists such as Bono and Bob Geldof (who helped organize the Live Aid benefit in 1985) has also joined forces with Net Aid.
Net Aid is organizing an international concert in three different cities around the world later this year. Pledges of support have been received from other artists including David Bowie, the Beastie Boys, R.E.M., Oasis, Smashing Pumpkins, The Pretenders, Pulp and Prodigy.
In preparation for a planned protest at the G8 Summit in Germany this weekend (June 19), Farrell, with the support of Cibo Matto and Sean Lennon , launched the Jubilee 2000 celebration. The club, decorated with flowers and organically dressed dancers flowed with positive energy.
Beginning the evening was the soulful Medusa, who got the crowd going before the ever eclectic Cibo Matto hit the stage. Featuring frequent bassist and vocalist, Sean Lennon, the Japanese popsters played a memorable and tight five song set that included random talk about Star Wars and a handful of songs (Spoon, Working For Vacation, Beef Jerky and Sci-Fi Wasabi) from their recently released sophomore album, Stereotype A.
In between sets, performance artists paraded through the audience holding banners that declared Liberty and humans wrapped in green rubber balls danced to tribal music.
Farrell, making his first solo appearance in Los Angeles, was the main draw for the majority of gathered fans. A nine-minute video preceded the show featuring footage of Farrell and poverty stricken countries in relation to the Jubilee 2000 cause. Narrated by Farrell, the video also teased his new solo material, which was about to debut.
Beginning the set was a heavy beat provided by a bongo player and percussionist on stage. Farrell, dressed in a colorful dress and turban, began with Happy Birthday Jubilee a mesmerizing, electronic journey that included joyful verses sung in true Farrell fashion. Showcasing a few other songs (Shekeina and Through Me - featuring the Mad Professor) form his forthcoming solo album, Songs Yet To Be Sung. As the audience screamed and cheered in between songs, Farrell appeared overwhelmed by the roaring response. Farrell, taking himself out of the spotlight and saving the best for last, welcomed a Brazilian dance troupe to the stage for the encore.
The amazing guests put on a 15-minute show filled with dancing and trance like percussion. All the while, Perry danced along, shaking a gourd and enjoying watching inspired audience members get swept away in the moment. Joining him on stage was Angelo Moore of Fishbone. Also witnessing the glorious spectacle were members of No Doubt and 311.
As a progressive and innovative artist, Farrell once again has reinvented himself and his music. Farrell is proving once again to be a creator, not a follower. A fun and festive event, Jubilee 2000 was a night of celebration and education, lessons that hopefully left the room with the inspired crowd.
