Briefly News and Comment: 'The Chris Isaak Show,' Chili Peppers and Neil Young
Plus: The Breeders. PJ Harvey . Syd Barrett. Napster.
Chris Isaak has a Showtime sit-com starting in March. Showtime says that the show is "a charming blend of fact and fiction, giving the viewer a comedic peek into the life of an everyday guy with the not-so-everyday job of a rockstar. ... The version of Chris' band Silvertone that appears in the show is rooted in reality--drummer Kenney Dale Johnson, bassist Rowland Salley and guitarist Hershel Yatovitz have been playing with Isaak for years and portray versions of themselves in the series."
In related news, rock is dead.
Red Hot Chili Peppers, Neil Young and Crazy Horse and Thelonious Monster will perform at a benefit for Gloria Scott, a Los Angeles substance abuse counselor, on March 1 at the Hollywood Palladium. Scott has fallen ill, according to a press release.
The Breeders will not be playing the L.A. charity show for Children of the Night on Feb. 25, because organizers now fear that the venue will not be able to hold all of the people who have phoned in for information, Wall of Sound reported.
Universal Music Canada's website will stream PJ Harvey's Dec. 1 Toronto show beginning on Thursday (2/15), Jamshowbiz.com reported.
London rock club Hammersmith Palais is closing its doors, and according to Billboard.com, it's giving the sign from its entrance to Joe Strummer, whose band the Clash immortalized the venue in the song "(White Man in) Hammersmith Palais."
The forthcoming Syd Barrett compilation, "Wouldn't You Miss Me?" will feature a previously unreleased song entitled "Bob Dylan's Blues," RollingStone.com reported. Barrett's former Pink Floyd bandmate, David Gilmour, who had worked on Barrett's solo albums, had the master tape for the song.
So we keep reading reports of how the major labels are scrambling to find their own online services to fill the void of Napster, but they miss this point: for many Napster users, half the fun is being able to offer songs. (Well, maybe not half.)
They don't call it the Napster community for nothing.
But on the other hand, as Kathy Fisher pointed out, the problem with Napster and all the other file-sharing services is that a generation of music fans may grow up expecting that music should always be free.
