Prince Be of PM Dawn
When PM Dawn burst onto the scene back in 1990, the music world didn't quite know how to react to the cosmic hip-hop of two brothers from New Jersey. While Prince Be and JC The Eternal's style of flowing robes, beaded dreads and infinite spirituality alienated parts of the hip-hop community, the public sure knew how to react. Set Adrift On Memory Bliss, PM Dawn's breakthrough single featuring a sample from Spandau Ballet, rocketed to number one, expanding minds to the prospect of integrated sampling that Puff Daddy has since claimed as his own.
Avoiding the one hit wonder label, PM Dawn continued their hit making streak with I'd Die Without You and Looking Through Patient Eyes. Now, as the duo launches their fourth release, Dearest Christian... the sound has changed, but the message is still the same. Filled with songs about the state of the world and mans role in it, the album continues the themes of spirituality and redemption that have always run through PM Dawn's work. The album is already garnering the band some of their best reviews to date from such notable sources as Rolling Stone, Spin and Entertainment Weekly.
Prince Be recently sat down with Live Daily assistant editor David Shoulberg to talk about the new album, touring, and what else -- the year 2000:
