Charts: Dave Matthews Band debuts in top slot
“Everyday” (RCA), the latest from Dave Matthews Band , comes roaring out of the gate in its first week on the shelves to debut at No. 1, according to RCA. New debuts from DJ Clue and Project Pat also enter the Top 10 this week, just behind the former No. 1 album from Shaggy.
Dave Matthews Band’s fourth album moved 732,700 copies last week, giving it the highest first-week sales of any 2001 release, as well as the highest first-week sales of any of the band’s albums to date. (The group’s 1998 release, “Before These Crowded Streets," also debuted at No. 1.) The album's strong showing was aided by the success of its first single, “I Did It,” which is currently at No. 3 on trade publication Radio & Records’ adult alternative national airplay chart.
With first week sales of nearly three-quarters-of-a-million albums, the performance of "Everyday" may lend fuel to Napster proponents, who have argued that free file-sharing of copyrighted works does not decrease album sales; Dave Matthews Band chose to promote the album by first releasing "I Did It" via Napster.
Dave Matthews Band will kick off its tour in support of “Everyday” next month.
"Everyday" pushes Shaggy’s “Hotshot” (MCA)--which spent the previous four weeks at No. 1--down to the No. 2 slot.
Clocking in with impressive debuts of their own this week are DJ Clue's “The Professional Part 2” (Def Jam) at No. 3 and Project Pat's “Mista Don’t Play: Everythang’s Workin’” (Loud) at No. 4.
“The Professional Part 2”--a collection of mixes that features artists such as DMX, Eminem, Method Man, Snoop Dogg and Redman--is the follow up to DJ Clue’s August 2000 release, “Backstage Mix Tape.” The latter album debuted at No. 6 in its first week out.
“Mista Don’t Play” features the single “Chickenhead,” currently at No. 19 on Radio & Records’ urban national airplay chart. The album is the follow-up to Project Pat’s 2000 release, “Murderers and Robbers” (Project Records).
The new albums occupying the top rungs of this week’s chart push Dido’s “No Angel” (Arista) down a notch to No. 5, the Beatles’ “1” (Capitol) down three spots to No. 6, and the “Save the Last Dance” soundtrack (Hollywood) down two spots to No. 7.
Despite a lot of movement elsewhere in the Top 10, rapper Ja Rule’s “Rule 3:36” (Def Jam) stands at No. 8 for a third week in a row. The album--which debuted at No. 1 last October--features the track “Put It on Me,” the No. 1 song on Radio & Records’ latest urban national airplay chart.
Rounding out this week’s Top 10 is “WWF: The Music Vol. 5,” down to No. 9 after debuting at No. 2 last week, and Lenny Kravitz’s “Greatest Hits” (Virgin), which dips to No. 10 after spending three weeks in a row at No. 7.
Making a notable debut just outside the Top 10 is Silkk the Shocker’s “My World, My Way” (Priority), which enters the chart at No. 12. Debuting at No. 22, meanwhile, is Jessica Andrews’ sophomore release, “Who I Am” (DreamWorks).
Pearl Jam, who last week released 23 live albums representing the first 23 dates on its 2000 North American outing, sees seven of the 2-CD sets debut in the Top 200 this week: "Jones Beach 8/25/2000" at No. 159, "Boston 8/29/2000" at No. 163, "Indianapolis 8/18/2000" at No. 174, "Pittsburgh 9/5/2000" at No. 176, "Philadelphia 9/1/2000" at No. 179, "Tampa 8/12/2000" at No. 181 and "Memphis 8/15/2000" at No. 191.
The seven-album debut breaks the record set by the group last fall, when five of the group's simultaneously released 25 “official bootlegs” recorded during its 2000 European tour debuted in the Top 200.
On March 27, Pearl Jam will release 24 more 2-CD sets recorded during last year’s North American tour.
