Depeche Mode sets up world tour behind 'Exciter'
Depeche Mode is plotting a massive world tour in support of its forthcoming release “Exciter” (Reprise). The tour is set to begin in Montreal on June 15, according to a group spokesperson. Dates are planned through October.
More than 30 dates have been lined up for the North American leg of the tour. Venues have not yet been announced, but will be confirmed in the next couple of weeks.
Following the early August conclusion of its North American jaunt, the group will tour Europe from late August through the end of October.
The setlist for Depeche Mode’s “Exciter” tour will include 25 songs that were selected by the group from an initial list of 100 tracks culled from its 10 studio albums, according to a press release. Each performance will include a mix of classic tracks and songs from the band’s forthcoming album.
The group’s longtime collaborator Anton Corbijn will again handle the tour’s stage-design.
"Anton is someone who doesn't merely listen to our music,” said singer David Gahan in the group’s recent press release, “he gets inside of it and interprets it in a way that always surprises us."
Depeche Mode last toured behind its 1998 greatest-hits compilation, “The Singles 86>98.” The group--a trio comprising Gahan and keyboardists Martin Gore and Andrew Fletcher--was augmented on that outing by Christian Eigner (drums), Peter Gordino (keyboards), and Janet Ramus and Jordan Bailey (backing vocals). The same lineup will be touring with Depeche Mode behind “Exciter.”
Set for release on May 15, “Exciter” is the group’s first album of all-new material since 1997’s “Ultra.” Streaming-audio samples of all of the album’s tracks are available on the band’s official website. Mark Bell, who is best known for his work on Bjork’s “Homogenic” and “Selma Songs,” produced the disc.
“Dream On,” the first single from “Exciter,” is set to hit radio this month. A video for the song was shot last month in the desert outside of Barstow, Calif.
Depeche Mode has sold more than 50 million albums during its 20-year career, according to the group’s publicist.
