Rock And Soul Veterans Lobby Lawmakers For 'Truth In Rock' Legislation

Original members of the Supremes, Drifters, Danny and the Juniors, Sam and Dave, and the Crystals held a press conference on Capitol Hill on Tuesday (3/16) to ask lawmakers to support the "Truth In Rock Act," a piece of legislation introduced recently introduced in the House of Representatives, according to a Reuters report.

The bill, an amendment to the Lanham Act, would allow original members of performing groups to pursue legal recourse against managers, promoters and other performers who mount tours falsely implying that they are the original act.

Under the terms of the proposed amendment, original members of the act could block the use of the act's name by copycats and seek damages for copyright infringement.

It's not yet known if a provision is included to address twin touring outfits that both include former original members of the act. In some cases, former members of a group will form multiple touring versions of the act, as classic rock acts like Foghat have done in years past. In some cases, these touring arrangements have the blessing of all concerned, while others are drawn into court battles.
