Briefly News and Comment: Elton John, Napster
plus: Rolling Rock Town Fair, with STP, Live , others.
Elton John is quoted by CNN.com as saying that he will appeal a court's decision against him, handed down on Wednesday (4/11), in his lawsuit against his former management. Click here for background.
Federal judge Marilyn Patel said on Tuesday (4/10) that Napster's attempt to filter the copyrighted songs that the court has directed it to filter has been a "disgrace," the New York Times reported. According to the article, "The judge did not specify how Napster should comply, however, saying she would seek counsel with a technical expert about the filtering process."
It seems to us that if one is going to use a word like "disgrace"--an incendiary word that, to us, implies that Patel sees a clear path that Napster is not taking--then one should follow it up by pointing out the clear path that Napster should be taking. But Ms. Patel doesn't seem to know what the clear path is.
According to FinancialTimes.com, "Bertelsmann, the German-based media group, has abandoned a plan to persuade rival record labels to join its alliance with Napster."
