Sade set to return to North America after lengthy hiatus

update: Sade , whose “Lovers Rock” was released last fall, has revealed plans for her first North American tour in more than seven years. The summer outing is set to kick off in mid-July.

Tickets for five of the singer’s newly announced dates will hit box offices this weekend, according to tour promoter SFX Entertainment.

Thirteen North American concerts have been confirmed, and a total of at least 30 stops are planned, according to Sade’s official website.

“Lovers Rock,” which surfaced last November and charted at No. 3, has sold over 2.5 million copies to date, and was certified platinum last December by the Recording Industry Association of America. The album is the singer’s first release of all new material since 1992’s “Love Deluxe.”

“King of Sorrow,” the latest single from “Lovers Rock,” is currently at No. 2 on Billboard’s Bubbling Under R&B/Hip-Hop Singles chart, and was at the top of that chart two weeks ago.

In addition to “Lovers Rock,” last November also saw the release of digitally remastered versions of all of Sade’s previous albums: “Diamond Life” (1984), “Promise” (1985), “Stronger Than Pride” (1988), “Love Deluxe” (1992) and “The Best of Sade” (1994). All of the albums have been certified quadruple-platinum except for “Stronger Than Pride,” which has been certified triple-platinum.

The Nigerian-born, London-raised singer first rose to prominence in the U.S. with the mid-‘80s hit “Smooth Operator” from 1984’s “Diamond Life.” The hit “Sweetest Taboo” from 1985’s “Promise” followed closely behind it, and further solidified Sade’s stateside success.
