New Releases, May 22: Staind, Redman, Stabbing Westward

plus: Bon Jovi, Wellwater Conspiracy, Static-X , DJ Logic , more.

Staind delivers its sophomore effort this week, “Break the Cycle” (Flip), the follow-up to the group’s 1999 platinum debut, “Dysfunction.” The band has already scored a hit with the album’s first single, “It’s Been Awhile,” which has topped Billboard’s Modern Rock Tracks and Mainstream Rock Tracks single charts for several consecutive weeks now.

The song is also the No. 1 track on trade publication Radio & Records’ latest Active Rock national airplay chart.

To help launch its new album, Boston-based Staind has lined up in-store appearances throughout the Northeast this week, with the following stops planned: midnight on Monday (5/21) at Looney Tunes in West Babylon, N.Y.; 4-6 p.m. on Tuesday (5/22) at Tower Records in North Paramus, N.J.; 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday (5/22) at Vintage Vinyl in Fords, N.J.; 3-5 p.m. on Wednesday (5/23) at Newbury Comics in Natick, Mass.; 4-6 p.m. on Thursday (5/24) at Record Town in Enfield, Conn.

In addition to current hit “It’s Been Awhile,” “Break the Cycle” also features a studio version of the group’s breakthrough hit “Outside”; a live version of the song featuring Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst on backing vocals--taken from the “Family Values” CD--that made a splash on radio last year.

Durst--who is credited with getting the band signed to Flip, which is also Limp Bizkit's label--directed the video for “It’s Been Awhile,” according to Staind’s official website.

Staind is already on the road, and will be touring in support of “Break the Cycle” through the summer.

“Malpractice” is the latest Def Jam release from New Jersey rapper Redman . The disc follows his 1998 platinum release, “Doc’s da Name 2000.”

“Let’s Get Dirty (I Can’t Get in Da Club), the first single from “Malpractice,” has made its way onto Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart, where it currently sits at No. 53.

“Malpractice”--Redman’s fifth album--features guest appearances by fellow hip-hop artists Scarface, D-Don, Roz and Naughty by Nature’s Treach, according to Redman’s official website.

Redman most recently appeared on 1999’s “Blackout,” a collaboration with rapper Method Man.

Stabbing Westward surfaces with a self-titled release, the band’s first album for Koch Records. The group parted ways with Columbia last year after releasing 1993’s “Ungod,” 1997’s “Wither Blister Burn & Peel” and 1998’s “Darkest Days” on the label. The latter two albums both went gold, according to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

“So Far Away,” the first single from the band’s forthcoming album, has been holding fast at No. 32 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Tracks chart for several weeks now.

Stabbing Westward kicked off a tour in support of the album in late April, and is expected to be on the road through the end of the summer, according to its official website.

Bon Jovi follows last year’s multi-platinum “Crush” with this week’s “One Wild Night: Live 1985-2001” the group’s first concert album. The 15-track compilation features the group performing hits such as “Livin’ on a Prayer,” “You Give Love a Bad Name,” “Wanted Dead or Alive” and recent single “It’s My Life.” Songs were culled from 17-years-worth of live footage, according to a group press release.

The group, which recently completed the first leg of a U.S. tour, will kick off a European jaunt next month, and is scheduled to return to the states for a second leg of dates in July.

Pearl Jam drummer Matt Cameron reteams with Monster Magnet founder John McBain for “The Scroll and Its Combinations” (TVT), the third release from the duo’s side project, Wellwater Conspiracy.

The album features guest appearances by Cameron’s former Soundgarden bandmates Ben Shepherd (bass) and Kim Thayil (guitar), as well as a guest spot by Wes C. Addle (a.k.a. Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder).

In addition to playing the drums, Cameron also played much of the guitar and bass on “The Scroll and Its Combinations,” and also sang, according to a press release.

On Tuesday (5/22), Cameron and McBain are scheduled to participate in an online chat on Yahoo! at 9 p.m., according to the group’s official website.

Cameron and McBain--along with Shepherd--first collaborated in the early ‘90s on a side project named Hater.
