Charts: Tool's 'Lateralus' charges in at No. 1
Tool ’s “Lateralus” leads a pack of five Top 10 debuts onto the album chart this week, and ends a two-week reign atop the chart by Destiny’s Child’s “Survivor.” The latest from Missy Elliott, Weezer, R.E.M. and Depeche Mode round out the barrage of new Top 10 entries.
“Lateralus” sold roughly 555,000 copies during its first week in stores, according to industry sources, easily securing its place in the No. 1 spot on the forthcoming Billboard 200 album chart. The album is Tool’s first collection of original material since 1996’s “Aenima,” which debuted at No. 2. “Schism,” the first single from “Lateralus,” leapt ten spots to No. 5 on trade publication Radio & Records’ latest active rock airplay chart.
The half-a-million copies that “Lateralus” moved places it well ahead of this week’s No. 2 debut from Missy Elliot, “Miss E … So Addictive” (Elektra). Elliot’s latest single, “Get Ur Freak On,” currently resides at No. 1 on Radio & Records’ urban airplay chart.
The high-charting entries from Tool and Elliot knock both Destiny’s Child’s “Survivor” (Columbia) and Janet Jackson’s “All for You” (Virgin) down two notches apiece, placing them at Nos. 3 and 5, respectively.
Sandwiched between “Survivor” and “All for You” is the No. 4 debut from Weezer, a self-titled opus that many have dubbed “The Green Album” (Geffen) for its green cover. The album’s first-week performance was spurred by its single “Hash Pipe,” a song that is spending its second week in the No. 2 spot on Billboard’s Modern Rock Tracks chart.
Clocking in with a No. 6 debut is R.E.M.’s “Reveal” (Warner Bros.), the 12th studio release from the veteran rock trio, and its second since the 1997 departure of drummer Bill Berry. The album’s first single, “Imitation Life,” tops Radio & Records’ triple-A chart this week.
“NOW That’s What I Call Music! Vol. 6” (Epic) is down three spots to No. 7.
“Exciter” (Reprise), the latest from Depeche Mode, is the fifth and final Top 10 debut this week, checking in at No. 8. "Dream On,” the first single from “Exciter,” is at No. 14 on Billboard’s latest Modern Rock Tracks chart, up from No. 16 last week and No. 22 two weeks back.
Paul McCartney’s “Wingspan” (Capitol)--a 2-CD collection of songs from his post-Beatles outfit Wings--drops seven spots to No. 9 this week. The album is followed by last week’s No. 5 debut, the “Moulin Rouge” soundtrack (Interscope), which drops to No. 10 this week.
Further down the chart, veteran metal act Megadeth’s “The World Needs a Hero” (Sanctuary) enters the chart at No. 16; Olivia’s self-titled debut on J Records logs in at No. 55; and the Go-Go’s first studio release in 17 years, “God Bless the Go-Go’s” (Beyond), surfaces at No. 57.
