Gov’t Mule gears up for road work behind new album

June 25, 2001 05:16 PM
Gov’t Mule will support its forthcoming release, “The Deep End,” with a two-month long U.S. tour that will kick off in early September.

Prior to that outing, Mule vocalist-guitarist Warren Haynes has three acoustic-solo performances scheduled in July, all of which are opening dates for Phil Lesh and Friends, and Gov’t Mule has an Aug. 17 concert.

In addition to Haynes, Gov’t Mule’s touring lineup will feature drummer Matt Abts, keyboardist Chuck Leavell (The Rolling Stones, Allman Brothers Band) and rotating bassists Oteil Burbridge (Allman Brothers Band) and David Schools (Widespread Panic). Details on which bassist is appearing at which dates appear in the itinerary below.

Gov’t Mule’s tour is currently scheduled to wrap up on Oct. 27, on which date the group plans to give a performance at the New Orleans Voodoo Fest, followed by a late-night/early-morning set at the New Orleans House of Blues.

“The Deep End” is due out in September, according to the Gov’t Mule’s official website. The album is a tribute to late Gov’t mule bassist Allen Woody, who died last summer. It features 21 new songs written by Haynes, and 25 different bass players.

Bassists that appear on “The Deep End” include both Burbridge and Schools, as well as Les Claypool (Primus), Phil Lesh (Grateful Dead, Phil & Friends), Bootsy Collins (James Brown, George Clinton & P-Funk), John Entwistle (The Who), Mike Watt (Minutemen/Firehose) and Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers).

Gov’t Mule’s most recent studio release is last year’s “Life Before Insanity.”
