Briefly News and Comment: Eminem sentenced, Carlene Carter and Howie Epstein arrested
plus: Yahoo! snaps up Launch. Huey Lewis news.
Eminem was sentenced to a year of probation on Thursday (6/28) on a weapons charge stemming from an incident last June in which he allegedly pulled a gun on an associate of Insane Clown Posse. The 28-year-old rapper--who could have received a five-year prison sentence--pleaded no contest to the charges in April. A Michigan circuit court judge also ordered Eminem to perform community service, telling the rapper to submit a creative idea that would be "impactful to young people" within 21 days.
Country singer Carlene Carter (the step-daughter of Johnny Cash) and her "longtime companion" Howie Epstein (who plays bass for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers) were arrested in Albuquerque, N.M., on Tuesday night (6/26) after they were caught in an allegedly stolen Jeep Cherokee, the Albuquerque Journal reported. Police claim they turned up about three grams of black tar heroin and "a large amount of drug paraphernalia" during a search of the car, which was initially pulled over for speeding.
Carter allegedly admitted the drugs and paraphernalia belonged to her, and was jailed on felony charges of heroin possession and of receiving or transferring a stolen vehicle. Epstein was charged with receiving or transferring a stolen vehicle.
Carter reportedly told police that the vehicle was borrowed from a family member, and Epstein claimed that they were rushing to the airport so that Epstein could make it to a show in the eastern U.S.
Both were reportedly released from jail on Wednesday morning (6/27) when the case was dismissed without prejudice, meaning that prosecutors can re-file the cases later.
No Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' concert dates were canceled, and Epstein, according to E! Online, did not miss any shows. The tour is scheduled to resume near Philadelphia on Thursday (6/28). Petty's publicist refused to comment.
