Release date set for new Bob Dylan album
Bob Dylan 's 43rd album--titled "Love and Theft"--has been slotted for release on Sept. 11, Columbia Records announced. The album is Dylan's first since 1997's million-selling "Time Out of Mind."
According to his label, "Love and Theft" features 12 Dylan compositions that he recorded this spring with his touring band, along with guest musicians including Texas keyboard player Augie Myers.
"The songs don't have any genetic history," Dylan told USA Today in a story published on Monday (7/16). "Is it like 'Time Out of Mind' or 'Oh Mercy' or 'Blood on the Tracks' or whatever? Probably not. I think of it more as a greatest-hits album, volume one or volume two. Without the hits--not yet, anyway."
He added that the new songs "are variations on the 12-bar theme and blues-based melodies. The music here is an electronic grid, the lyrics being the substructure that holds it all together."
Among the tracks on "Love and Theft" is a version of "Mississippi," a song that was cut from "Time Out of Mind" and later recorded by Sheryl Crow. All other songs on the album are reportedly recent compositions.
According to Columbia, the 60-year-old musician has performed nearly 450 concerts around the world in the four years since the release of "Time Out of Mind." He also wrote and recorded "Things Have Changed," which appeared on the Wonder Boys movie soundtrack. The song won an Academy Award and a Golden Globe earlier this year.
Dylan is currently on tour in Europe, and is scheduled to play a series of U.S. dates in August.
