Ani DiFranco's fall tour plans take shape

Singer-songwriter Ani DiFranco , who wrapped up her summer tour earlier this month, will head out on another series of U.S. dates in September. Her itinerary so far includes 10 cities--mostly in the East--but more dates are expected.

The Buffalo, N.Y., native continues to support her latest album, the 2-CD set "Revelling/Reckoning." Half of the songs on each disc feature DiFranco solo, while on the other half, she is backed by her band.

DiFranco made news last week, when her planned July 19 performance on the Late Show with David Letterman was canceled after a disagreement between the artist and the show's producers about which song she would performed. DiFranco wanted to play "Subdivision," a song addressing racism in America that opens with the line "White people is so scared of black people." The show's producers "insisted that Ani instead perform 'Heatbreak Even' because its portrait of a stalled relationship was considered more 'upbeat,'" according to a statement issued by DiFranco's Righteous Babe label.

"As a matter of principle and a privilege of her hard-earned independence, Ani does not perform songs on demand, whether the demand comes from the producer of a television program, an audience member at one of her concerts, or even her own management," the statement said. "Faced with a choice between playing something 'upbeat' yet apolitical or not playing at all, Ani chose the latter. Both Ani and Righteous Babe regret any disappointment this decision causes viewers and fans."
