Beastie Boys top roster for September's Tibetan Freedom Concert
After forgoing a large-scale Tibetan Freedom Concert last year, the Beastie Boys will revive the benefit concert this September in London. In addition to Beastie Boys, the show will feature Joe Strummer, Pulp and Morcheeba, among others, according to organizers.
The event, which was started by Beastie Boys’ member Adam Yaunch in 1996, is scheduled to take place on Sept. 15. Published reports indicate it will take place at London’s Brockwell Park, but this could not be confirmed at press time.
Proceeds from the concert will benefit the Milarepa Fund, an international organization founded by the Beastie Boys that supports the Tibetan people's nonviolent struggle to regain their freedom, and that seeks to end the Chinese government’s occupation of Tibet.
The first Tibetan Freedom Concert was a two-day event that took place in San Francisco in 1996 and included performances by Beastie Boys, Smashing Pumpkins, Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rage Against the Machine, Beck, Bjork and more.
Similar two-day events were held in New York City in 1997 and in Washington D.C. in 1998. The 1999 incarnation, meanwhile, was organized as a global event, with concerts set on the same day in Amsterdam, Chicago, Sydney and Tokyo.
The event did not take place last year, but a small Tibetan Freedom Concert took place in Tokyo in May.
To date, the concerts have raised a total of about $2.3 million for the Milarepa Fund, organizers claim.
More information can be found at the official Tibetan Freedom Concert’s website and the Milarepa Fund’s official website.
