Mariah Carey remains hospitalized following 'breakdown'
Mariah Carey remains hospitalized and under psychiatric care a week after checking herself in due to what her publicist termed "extreme exhaustion."
Carey's spokesperson Cindi Berger, in a story published in Wednesday's (8/1) New York Daily News, said that Carey suffered "an emotional and physical breakdown." Though tabloid reports suggested that Carey attempted suicide prior to the breakdown, Berger refuted the reports--though she did acknowledge that Carey had sustained cuts on her body. "She did break some dishes and glasses, and she may have stepped on them," Berger said.
Contacted by LiveDaily, Berger's office would not elaborate further on the Daily News report.
Carey’s hospitalization has caused her to cancel all upcoming promotional appearances, including a previously scheduled headlining slot at tonight’s MTV 20th birthday party. "Glitter," her first album for Virgin Records after a long run at Columbia Records, is due out Aug. 21, and a film by the same name starring Carey is due out later this month as well.
Prior to checking herself into the hospital, Carey, 32, posted a distressed message on her official website. "What I'd like to do is just a take a little break or at least get one night of sleep without someone popping up about a video," Carey said. "All I really want is to just be me and that's what I should have done in the first place. ... I don't say this much but guess what, I don't take care of myself." The message has since been removed.
At the time of Carey’s hospitalization, her publicist issued a statement saying, "Carey has been hospitalized for extreme exhaustion after completing two movies, 'Glitter' and 'Wise Girls,' and simultaneously writing, recording and producing her album, the soundtrack 'Glitter.' She's been working around the clock."
Carey is also rumored to have recently split with her boyfriend, singer Luis Miguel, but Berger told the Daily News that the two had not "officially broken up."
