Pearl Jam , R.E.M., Dave Matthews, Alanis Morissette and others are slated to perform in Seattle during Groundwork 2001, a week-long benefit celebration that runs from Oct. 14-22. The event is part of the annual TeleFood Campaign of the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization, which provides the hungry with seeds, livestock and tools to produce their own food.

Michael Franti and Spearhead, Femi Kuti, Emmylou Harris, Mana, Wallflowers, Blind Boys of Alabama and Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros are also on the bill. For the complete lineup and ticket information, visit the event's official website.

In addition to the concerts, a benefit CD titled "Groundwork" will be released in October at all Hear Music/Starbucks locations in the U.S. and Canada, as well as online. The CD includes previously unreleased material donated by Madonna, Tom Waits, Moby, David Gray, Sheryl Crow, Joe Henry, and others. All net proceeds will go toward funding Groundwork projects.

Seattle-based Experience Music Project is producing the Groundwork 2001 concerts.

More than 1,000 Groundwork projects are being implemented in villages in more than 100 countries, from fish-smoking in Mali to beekeeping in Samoa.
